About
Dr Mario Improta, general surgeon in Lisbon
A doctor specialised in general surgery and emergency medicine, working between the hospital and the clinical side of digital health.
The clinical work
Mario Improta trained in Italy, in Bologna, and has worked in Italy and in Portugal, where he lives now. His clinical path runs through hospital surgical departments, emergency departments and prehospital care with the Italian 118 service. He also spent a period working and training in South Africa, and took part in an international cooperation project with Sulla Strada in Guatemala. Those experiences shaped how he thinks about access to care and about what is actually available in a given place.
Today he works in general surgery at Hospital de São José, in Lisbon. Alongside that, he is Chief Medical Officer at Elty, formerly DaVinci, a digital health company he has followed as it grew. His role there sits on the clinical side of the product: understanding what clinicians need and helping to turn it into something usable in daily practice. Preventive medicine and healthy longevity are a professional interest rather than a further specialisation, and he follows the evidence in these areas closely.
Values
Compassion, Bliss, Integrity, Freedom and Growth are my foundational values. Everything I do comes from those values: my work, my passions, my interactions with the people I am lucky enough to meet, to treat and to work with.
I’m an emergency surgeon with a strong passion for healthcare innovation and digital health. I believe in the power of empathetic communication as a key to building trust with patients and improving care outcomes.
Beyond my clinical practice, I am deeply committed to exploring digital solutions that can make medicine more accessible, efficient and personalised. I have a keen interest in the integration of technology and healthcare, with a focus on sustainability and the ethics of new healthcare frontiers.
Outside the operating room and the realm of technology, I find balance and inspiration in surfing, reading and meditation. These passions fuel my human and reflective approach to the profession, helping me maintain a clear and centred vision in both life and work.
I am always open to discussions and collaborations on innovative projects, whether in the clinical or digital domain. If you share a similar vision, feel free to get in touch.
Longevity and digital health
Alongside the clinical work there is a second area of competence: healthy longevity and digital health. He works on it as Chief Medical Officer at Elty, an Italian digital health scaleup, where the job is to keep the clinical reasoning of a product sound and usable by the people who then have to apply it.
In practice that means designing tools with clinicians rather than around them, asking what evidence each feature rests on, and marking the point where a claim about prevention or longevity stops being supported. It is a competence built inside a company that grew quickly, not a further medical specialisation, and it is the part of his work that most often meets technology.
What this site is
This site is a short, factual record of that work: training, hospital posts, publications and current roles. It is written for colleagues who want to know what he does, for patients who want to understand his background before an appointment, for journalists and conference organisers looking for a reliable short biography, and for teams considering a collaboration in digital health. There is no blog and no newsletter; these pages change when something in his professional life changes.
Everything published here comes from Mario Improta himself. Dates, titles and affiliations are listed only when they can be confirmed, and references point to primary sources such as PubMed and LinkedIn rather than to summaries. The site is written in English, Italian and Portuguese, the languages in which he works and lives, and it does not collect analytics or personal data from visitors.
